L.A took no time at all in replacing Frolov, who was traded to the New York Rangers, by acquiring Ponikarovsky from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Frolov was a big loss for the Los Angeles Kings, but no doubt freed up some vital cap space, although those mens xxl skates will be hard for anyone to fill. A 20 goal a season man, with plenty of assists to boot, Frolov was always going to be difficult to replace, what with all the best goal scorers in the NHL tied down to big contracts.

In Ponikarovsky, the Kings have managed to pick up a player built in the same mould as Frolov. A creative goal scorer himself, the 6-foot-4, 229-pounder finished last season with 21 goals and 29 assists in 77 games. The Kings will enjoy the physical presence that Ponikarovsky brings as well as his creative talent. The Kings managed to get Ponikarovsky on a one year deal worth three million. No doubt they want to make sure Ponikarovsky can cut it before they offer him a big deal and big money.

The L.A. Kings managed to reach the playoffs last season and performed well against Vancouver despite going out in the first round. With talents like Drew Doughty in the team, the Kings will most likely be thinking they can repeat last year’s achievements, perhaps going one or two stages further in the playoffs also.

At 30 years old, the Kings have lost two years by replacing Frolov with Ponikarovsky. However, the latter should be good for a few seasons yet and has showed that age has not stopped his goal-scoring ability. It will be interesting to see how this forward player fares in the more defensively strong Western Conference. The Kings have done well to replace Frolov so quickly and with such a proven and experienced player.

Snowboarding can be an enjoyable event, but can also lead to nasty wipe outs and injuries for a beginner, especially if you are keen to take on the big hills at your next ski chalet holidays. There are many tips offered by more advanced snowboarders. These will help to prevent falling as well as damage to your equipment or your body. Follow the tips below to help keep yourself safe when just beginning to learn how to snowboard.

Binding your Feet to the Board

Be sure to always strap your front foot to the snowboard first. Leaving the back foot unsecured will allow you to skate to the chair lift. Once you have reached the destination, you can strap the back foot in to prepare for your skate down the hill. To properly bind your feet to the board, knock away any present snow from the area. Place your heel into the cup and strap the ankle in place first. Follow by strapping the toe binding across your foot. Beginners may find it easier to strap their feet onto the board while sitting down, though you can eventually learn how to do so standing up.

Falling

When you are just starting out, falling in inevitable. There are precautions you can take to reduce the likelihood of an injury during a wipe out. When possible, fall uphill. This will limit the impact. If you do fall while going downhill, roll with the fall until you are able to stop yourself. Trying to fight the crash is likely to lead to a more serious injury, especially to your arms and legs if you use them to try to stop too soon.

If you begin to fall backward, ball your hands into a fist. This will allow you to punch the snow, keeping your wrists from becoming injured. With broken wrists being the most common injury for snowboarders, it is ideal to keep your hands in a fist the entire time you are boarding.

After the Draft Entry, July the first is possibly the biggest date of the summer for the NHL and all its teams. It is the date when contracts end and certain players are made unrestricted free agents. This is a great chance for some teams to pick up quality players who are looking for a change or have fallen out of favour at their franchises. Of course, some players are off-loaded to free up cap space as well. Ilya Kovalchuk, for example, is destined to become a free agent but his $9 million a year salary requirements will make him only available to those franchises that have a huge amount of cap space left. It is the busiest time of year concerning trades also as teams are looking to build for the upcoming NHL season.

Some of the earliest movements in the market are Patrick O’Sullivan from the Oilers to the Coyotes in return for Jim Vandermeer . The Coyotes are in the market for forwards and they believe O’Sullivan has the potential to be a great player. He is still young and will no doubt wish to rebound after a torrid season in Edmonton. Edmonton, on the other hand, are in the market for defensemen after losing Visnovsky and Grebeshkov towards the end of last season and the youngster from Phoenix will fit the bill during the Oilers rebuilding phase.

Patrick Marleau, who was to be a free agent, has signed a new contract at the San Jose Sharks, which will come a disappointment to many other franchises and although we all though Volchenkov was going to become a Washington Capital, it turns out that was nothing more than speculation. Where he ends up, as one of the best shut-down defensemen in the league, will be very interesting. Look at the Penguins, who may lose Sergei Gonchar, to be sniffing around the exhibition stands.

Regardless of who goes where, July the first is a date that all NHL fans should set aside to keep an eye on.

It is in Austria and it is one of the best snowboarding resorts in the world, rated third among almost 40 resorts competeing for the first ten positions. This describes the St. Anton resort in the Austrian Alpes. It is being visited by lamost 200,000 tourists every year which makes it one of the top winter destinations -a preferred place for both people into sports and those who would like a peaceful and amazing vacation in the mountains.

The resort is famous for its recently renovated tracks that promise a great skiing and snowboarding experience. The off tracka routes are preferred my many who would like to go to the extremes of snowboarding -the area is not dangerous since the snowfall amount is significant but the teperatures allow a quich snow cycle thus ensuring the stable ground for the sportsmen. The first aid services and the mountain rescuers are acting more than accurate in cooperation with the private sporting agencies so a snowboarder must be sure he will be safe while on his board no matter whether he is on the track or enjoys an offtrack race near the resort -it is, however, essential to keep close to the resort since the area is more secure and reliable.

After the great day you can enjoy a great stay in the St Anton’s hotels all rated as among the best places to stay in the mountains around Europe. Typically like any resort, you can enjoy the diverse and colourful nightlife and relax after exhausting your adrenaline supplies during the day. The main customer groups are Germans and Austrians, but you can meet many many many people from all over the world that share your passion and snowboard addiction.

All these have made St Anton one of the top snowboarding destinations with an amazing range of services and many tracks available for all these people that can’t help the adrenaline thurst.

Snowboarding is a winter sport that many people enjoy all over the world. In fact, some people cannot wait to hit the slopes at the first sight of snowfall. Snowboarding can be a very fun sport, but without the proper gear, it can be dangerous as well so before you head out to the resorts, make sure you have prepared yourself.

Obviously, the most important part of your snowboarding gear is the snowboard itself. There are snowboards for all different types whether they be beginners or more advanced snowboarders. There are different sizes and prices for each snowboard and the type you get depends on the type of stunts you are planning on doing.

The size of the snowboard should be based on your feet size. Proper sizing will allow you to perform and balance better on the snow. If you enjoy making quick, tight turns, then freestyle equipment is what you need. The snowboard will be shorter in length with a deep cut and the flex will range from soft to moderate.

For the snowboarder who is looking to make long, quick and interesting moves, the freeride snowboard will fit perfectly. This board is longer in length and the flex will range from moderate to stiff. Its shape is semi-directional.

Other equipment and gear needed for snowboarding is a warm jacket, goggles, gloves, snowboard pants, boots and bindings. When buying boots, it is important to buy a pair that is comfortable and will keep your feet warm. You want to go with a pair that feels a bit snug at first, because you will end up breaking them in. You want to be sure your heels anchor firmly in the bottom of your boot because you do not want any type of heel lift which will make it tougher to tilt your board on its toe side edge.

These are basic snowboarding gear, however, there are others for the more advanced snowboarding depending on the type of tricks he or she is looking to do.

ShareThis

In the world of Snowboarding, like all of the other extreme sports, there are all sorts of styles, techniques and tricks that you can do. And of course they are all documented on video for posterity and to satisfy the sponsors who give these professional riders all sorts of money, gear, and boards (duly deserved too). But by far the coolest snowboarding DVD that I have ever seen is Positron.

Yeah, I will be the first one to admit that turning a trick in the half pipe is totally cool, and no one will deny the magic when Shaun White debuted the Tomahawk while winning the gold at Vancouver with a little bit of extra flair. But what about the riders that completely reject the whole park idea and trade in ski resorts for a little bit of good ol’ mother nature.

That’s what Positron is all about. Not only that, but this little piece of true color 16mm film shows what I believe is some of the most progressive boarding out there, even though it was filmed way back in 2004. Featuring the indisputable talents of Devun Walsh, Kale Stephans, JF Pelchat, Dionne Delesalle, among many, many others. These boys go to prove that mother nature is still the number one enemy of all snowboarders out there as they fight against it and in most cases (but not all) come out winning.

Along with the creative and advanced snowboarding that is done in this shoot, it is almost worth watching to witness the after mix animation done by the gang at Akcidental Studio. Not, it’s not Pixar, and it may look a little bit lame when compared to what you go and see at the theatre today, but it still makes me smile looking at it.

If you have any interest in extreme snowboarding I would really recommend putting down the Shaun White and X games for just a little bit to check out what happens when there is just a few guys and a mountain.

I have just gotten this post from a good friend of mine, I thought it was great and you should all read it!

I finished University around May of last year and was completely clueless as to what to do. The only thing I knew was that I wanted a year off from anything and I wanted to learn something new. I picked snowboarding.

The first few weeks were a very challenging time, I found it difficult to gain any balance, I fell over, a lot and I got very frustrated. I usually pick up sports and activities quite quickly and so the extra learning that was required to snowboard successfully was trying my patience. However I stuck with it and soon things started to fall into place.

After a couple of months I was able to board with some confidence, I couldn’t do any tricks or anything really extravagant (and I still can’t) but I was happy to coast down some minor hills at a meagre pace. Getting to the bottom without falling over for the first time was a thrill I can’t describe with words.

Later on in the year I decided to make a trip to Canada. I knew some people there and it would be a refreshing change of scenery for me. Also a massive positive in going to Canada was the chance to try out my new snowboarding skills on some real slopes, as opposed to the weak ones we have in England.

I initially arrived in Edmonton and stayed there for a few weeks, the weather was insanely hot for a little while and there was no snow. However, soon it became cold and the snow came down. I had been told by my friends that Jasper national park was a great place for skiing and snowboarding and so, when we were all set, we had a mini road-trip up to Jasper so I could show off what I had learned.

I ended up having a great time and my love for snowboarding has only increased because of this fantastic trip. My friends couldn’t get me off the slopes for the entire weekend we were there and I definitely got better. Now I neither want to leave, nor do I want winter to end. Here is to snowboarding and the joy it has given me.

So, if you have all remembered, it is my birthday next week and in case you are wondering what to buy me (that means you Ash) I have had my eye on that dvd set for Xena Warrior Princess, just in case you couldn’t think of anything…

As a skiing or snowboarding enthusiast, your business is snow. After all, taking up one of these snow-bound hobbies clearly means that you plan to spend quite a bit of time on the stuff. Given that you’ll have to get used to skiing on it, falling into it, and wiping it off your clothes and skin, you might want to become a bit better informed about the different types of snow that you might encounter when on the slopes. Powder snow. Ah, everyone loves powder snow. Powder is untouched, virginal snow that has recently fallen. It’s known for being soft, and has a smooth, gentle surface that’s wonderful to ski on. It’s also very gentle if you do happen to fall over whilst skiing or snowboarding. Bear in mind that the softness of powder snow means that you need to keep up speed in order not to sink into it. Crud. Despite its name, crud is only one step down from powder snow. Basically, it’s powder snow that has been touched by various skiers and passersby. It might have a few lumps and bumps here and there, and may be packed up in some places, and slippery in others. You might want to be careful when skiing on crud, but navigating its uneven surface will make you a better skier or snowboarder. Other types of snow include crust, slush, and ice. And yes, as their names indicate, they’re perhaps not quite as much fun to ski on as the other types of snow previously mentioned. You’ll find turns harder to navigate when skiing on slush, and you’ll need to be a bit more aggressive when riding on crust to make sure that you don’t break through the hard shell of snow. Ice, obviously, is extremely slippery, and should be approached with care. Actually, I have a friend who has recently gone over to canada and looked at Secondary education job openings simply so she could snowboard of her weekends! How great is that?

The reason why I created this site is because a few years ago I moved to the UK, and don’t get me wrong, I love it here. But I was shocked to find that the ‘mountains’ people expected me to snowboard on where in fact small hills. Seriously, they made the foothills of the Rockies look like Mount Everest and I felt that a little bit of education was needed before people went out and blindly booked their ski holidays.

Growing up I remember that the best feeling ever was when you climbed onto the gondola to go up to the top of Sunshine Village. And when you reached the get-off point you felt like you were on top of the world. And then you would climb on a chairlift and go even higher. I don’t know what it feels like to fly, but I imagine that it would be a similar experience to this.

The truth of the matter is that when you are flying down a hill with a board strapped to your feet nothing can touch you (that’s not entirely true, and I have a history of broken bones to prove it). There are no worries, your alone and you can be exactly who you are, whoever that happens to be. Of everything I miss most about Canada, the dearest one is the mountains, I miss being able to touch the sky. And I think that everyone should experience that, at least once.
